You don’t have to be a connoisseur of vintage automobiles to appreciate the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the most prestigious automotive event in the United States.
Held on the third Sunday of August on the grounds of the Pebble Beach Golf Links near Carmel, California, the Concours is the climax of a week of classic car events that take over the Monterey Peninsula each year.

The first Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance was held in 1950, and featured two to three dozen cars in three classes. In 2013, hundreds of cars and motorcycles from dozens of marques were entered into the 23 classes. Each year, a number of special classes are established, designed to highlight a particular brand or type of vehicle. This year’s special classes were: Lincoln Custom Coachwork; Vanvooren Coachwork; Simplex; Aston Martin Centennial; Lamborghini; Porsche 911; BMW 507; and French Motorcycles.

The featured marques are announced in January, and applications for competition are accepted through the end of that month. The Selection Committee meets at the end of March to determine which vehicles will be invited to the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links for the Concours d’Elegance.

Judging takes place on the fairway on the day of the Concours. “Class Judges evaluate all of the candidates in a particular class to determine if they are correctly preserved or restored. Class Judges are each acknowledged experts on a specific marque or marques, and they judge only the class related to their area of expertise, ” according to the Concours rules. Teams of Honorary Judges determine the winners of the additional special awards, beyond the class awards and Best of Show. The winners of First in Class awards compete for Best of Show. A select number of Class Judges, Honorary Judges, the Chairman and the Chief Judge vote for the award, evaluating each First in Class winner as it passes the review stand during the First in Class award presentations. “The car with the most votes is named Best of Show, ” states the Concours judging page.

The 2013 Best of Show winner was Joseph and Margie Cassini III’s 1934 Packard 1108 Twelve Dietrich Convertible Victoria, which was the First in Class winner for Class C2: American Classic Closed. The beautiful Packard also won the Gwenn Graham Most Elegant Convertible award. Photos and complete winners lists are available on the Pebble Beach Concours website.

Next year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will be held on Sunday, August 17, 2014. The event is open to the public. Tickets will be available for sale beginning the week of November 22, 2013.
