Flammability of Non-Metallic Materials Flammability, Materials Requirements
2 types: Without part number suffix, A types Preface
This standard applies to vehicle parts that are made of non-metallic materials and that have stricter flammability requirements than those in Technical Supply Specification TL 1010.
It defines the properties that must be present in order for a material to be characterized as "of low flammability," "self-extinguishing," or "non-combustible," which makes it possible to classify materi‐als according to their flammability.Previous issues

This standard defines the requirements for the flammability of non-metallic materials, as well as for the components for the whole vehicle that are made of them.
Application examples: Noise protection covers in the area of pyrotechnic seat-belt tensioner sys‐tems, high-voltage packages (e.g., battery, battery cover, high-voltage cables)Types
This standard applies to the following types:Without part number suffix:
Non-combustible materials
Type A V0:Materials that are of low flammability or self-extinguishing as per the re‐quirements in table 1
Type A V1:Materials that are of low flammability or self-extinguishing as per the re‐quirements in table 1
Type A V2:
Materials that are of low flammability or self-extinguishing as per the re‐quirements in table 1
Designation
A) Example for the designation of a non-combustible material as per TL 1011:
Material, flame-resistant as per TL 1011
B) Example for the designation of a material of low flammability as per TL 1011-A with the following properties:–Afterflame after each exposure to flame: ≤ 30 s
–Total afterflame time after 10 exposures to flame 1): ≤ 250 s –Afterglow after each exposure to flame: ≤ 60 s –No dripping flaming material –
No ignition of wadding

Requirements Basic requirements
Approval of first supply and changes as per Volkswagen standard VW 01155Avoidance of hazardous substances as per VW 91101
The test method is based on DIN EN 60695-11-10 and standard UL 94.
At least 5 finished parts, or at least 5 bar specimens for each material variant, are required for a complete examination.Number and shape of specimens
5 rectangular bars are tested:
Width w  = (13 ±1) mm; length-to-width ratio ≥ 10
Deviating specimen geometries must be agreed upon with the appropriate Materials department and recorded in the inspection report.
The specimens are taken from the finished part. If this is not possible, the specimen thickness must match the finished part's wall thickness.
If the finished part's wall thicknesses vary, a full examination must be conducted using the maxi‐mum and minimum wall thicknesses.Pretreatment and conditioning
The tests are conducted on unaged specimens (as-received condition) and aged specimens (heat-aged).
The following applies to the aging of specimens:
Interior components 168 h at (70 ±2) °C Exterior components; chassis and power‐train packages
168 h at (100 ±2) °C Before the test, the unaged specimens must be stored for at least 48 h at (21 ±3) °C and (50 ±15)% relative humidity (hereinafter referred to as room temperature (RT)).Before the test, the aged specimens must be stored for at least 4 h at RT.

Test procedure
TL 1011:
Hang each of the 5 specimens vertically along their longitudinal axis and expose them to a blue,(50 ±1) mm-tall Bunsen burner flame for 15 s. The flame must be non-luminous and must not make any noise (see figure 1). Distance between upper edge of burner and lower edge of speci‐men: (35 ±1) m

Hang each of the 5 specimens vertically along their longitudinal axis and expose them to a blue,(20 ±1) mm-tall Bunsen burner flame for 10 s. The flame must be non-luminous and must not make any noise (see figure 1). Distance between upper edge of burner and lower edge of speci‐men: (10 ±1) mm
After the specimens are exposed to flame and put out for the first time, expose each specimen to flame a second time for 10 s (see table 1).
