Luxembourg to Make All Public Transport Free
In March 2020, Luxembourg will become the first country in the world to make all public transport free.
Luxembourg is one of the smallest countries in Europe, but it has the highest number of cars per person in the whole European Union. In 2016, drivers in the capital, Luxembourg City, spent an average of 33 hours in traffic. That's 9 hours more than people in Copenhagen, Denmark, which has more than five times as many people.
Luxembourg is also one of the richest countries in the European Union, making it a popular place to work. The country sits between France, Belgium, and Germany, and the capital is only about 30 minutes from the border by car. Around 180,000 people from neighboring countries travel to work in Luxembourg City each day, even though the city has a population of just 116,000.
The government hopes that free public transport will reduce traffic, and parking near the bord
er will encourage drivers from other countries to use public transport once in Luxembourg. Last summer, the government already made public transport free for everyone under 20.
Luxembourg’s public transport system covers the whole country. It costs $562 million to run per year, but only makes just $46 million in ticket sales. At the moment, tickets cost $2.30 for two hours. This allows people to get almost anywhere on a single ticket.
