Since mid-2011 there has been a constant increase in imports of the US specification X5 and X6 from the USA to China by non-BMW authorized channels. This impacts very negatively on the operating result of the BMW Group and the authorized dealer network in China as well as the interests for the customers.
Warranty& Customer Care
One key measure from BMW is the reemphasis that the warranty for US specification vehicles is only valid in the U.S.A. including Puerto Rico, and only for repairs made at authorized BMW centers in the U.S.A. including Puerto Rico, along with the relevant dealer, officials and (indirect) customer communication in China. There is no valid BSI package or BRI package for the US specification vehicles imported from the USA to China by non-BMW authorized channels.
US specification vehicles imported from the USA to China by non-BMW authorized channels do not enjoy customer care service (including Customer Care Authorization), roadside assistance service and mobility service provided by BMW China. The last repairing dealer is responsible for handling customer’s complaints about these vehicles.

Due to different importation channels, the US specification vehicles sold in the Chinese market normally are not tested and homologated according to Chinese standards and thu
s the performance and reliability of the vehicles are not guaranteed. Due to different technical specifications codes, those vehicles later might have a potential risk of malfunction after being in use for a period of time in China, e.g. the hardware for design and software calibration of power train system are different from country to country due to different emission standards, fuel quality and driving conditions. The chassis and suspension system are also designed differently due to different road conditions, etc. This may also affect the stability and performance of the vehicles.
The risks of buying an imported non-China specification vehicle:
– In case of an accident or need for repair certain parts cannot be replaced as the parts are not homologated and BMW China is not allowed to import the parts to China.
– Even if it is possible, repair and service work will need more time and be more cost intensive because no workshop equipment for the US model codes and some US specifications may not be available.
– BMWs Navigation software is not original. Updates cannot be provided and malfunctioning will occur.
– Also malfunctioning other electronic parts as radio unit and cell phone connection are expected.
– Chinese government has very strong regulations for emissions. The imported non-China specification vehicles do not fulfill these regulations. Government may take actions.
– The residual value of the vehicle is much lower than residual value of a regular purchased X5 and X6.
– With increasing age more repair work has to be done as engine and exhaust system is developed for a different gas quality.
– In case of product recalls the customer may not get informed, as he is not in the BMW China Customer Database.

Difference US spec vehicle and China spec vehicle:
Following there are listed some main differences compared between a China version E70/E71 to an US version. Versions from other markets might differ also in a different way.
– Different catalytic converter and OBD systems: not homologated for use in China
– Airbag system is different and not homologated for China

– Some optional equipment does not work, e.g. if the alarm button (connected drive) is pressed, software may break down and needs to be flashed
– Different software: Software used for imported non-China specification vehicles is not original and may cause errors
– Different tires: Some of the US tires are not homologated for use in China

– Different bumpers: Chinese version without orange reflectors
– Different navigation System and different DVD-Area-Code
– Different Labeling with required CCC-label: in case of maintenance and repair the adequate spare parts may not be available and in worst case, cannot be imported due to missing CCC-label
